We have a Purebred Texas Longhorn bull, one Purebred Texas Longhorn cow, three Purebred Scotch Highland cows, three Brahma heifers, and a buffalo heifer that we use for breeding. We picked these breeds because they are a leaner meat and they are all hardy breeds. They are also really neat looking.

We will have calves to sell each year. We will not keep any of our calves, because we like our good natured bull and would like to keep him for a long time.

We like the idea of breeding the two lean meat breeds together. So far, the crossbred calves (longhorn to highland) are growing much faster and meatier than the pure longhorn calves. I would say the hybrid vigor is the key to this. We like the flashy hides on some of these calves. Also the skulls are worth some money too, depending on the size of the horns when the steer is butchered.
